National situation and policy developments

In May 2005 the Lithuanian Government adopted a new Program on Control and Prevention of Trafficking in Human Beings for 2005-2008 (Lithuanian). The program covers protection of victims’ rights and assistance to victims, efforts to fight organised criminal structures and individuals criminals related to human trafficking, as well as building a more coherent inter-institutional cooperation across all levels of governmental and nongovernmental institutions. The implementation of the program will be coordinated by the Ministry of the Interior.

Some legal provisions

Reflection period: 6 months.

Residence permits for VOTs: VOTs can receive temporary residence permits, and such permits are conditional upon cooperation in criminal proceedings. A temporary residence permit is provided if the VOT agrees to participate in criminal proceedings, and can be extended until the end of such proceedings.
